Protection Island

Protection Island is a National Wildlife Refuge where many sea birds (tufted puffins and rhinoceros auklets) nest in the high cliffs made of soft sand. One will also find a wide array of bird life on this island. Falcons, bald eagles, cormorants, pigeon guillemots and many others find home here as well. There is a very large harbor seal colony who live on the island all year long. There are also a few elephant seals and sea lions that occasionally can be seen. The trip requires experience in paddling as there is a 2 mile crossing that needs to be made to get to the island and there is no landing nor can one get within landing distance of the island.
