Dungeness Lighthouse Tour

Dungeness Lighthouse Tour $90/person
The Dungeness Lighthouse tour is for beginner paddlers.  The trip is for those who want to paddle three miles out to the lighthouse and enjoy the opportunity to experience sea kayaking at its fullest. At the lighthouse, we will land our kayaks among seals and take a walking tour of the lighthouse with lunch under the sun, and then paddle back to the launch site. The New Dungeness Lighthouse was built in 1857. Dungeness Spit is a five mile long sandbar covered with driftwood. The spit was formed by wind and wave action from the Strait of Juan de Fuca combined with the silt movements of the Dungeness River. The San Juan Islands - where whale watching is at its best - are close enough to see from the lighthouse and easy to get to from Anacortes or Vancouver Island. Paddle among harbor seals and local and migrating waterfowl.

The Dungeness Lighthouse tour consists of paddling along Graveyard Spit following the escort of the local harbor seals and watching the rhinoceros auklets dive for their endless supply of food. While countless other species of birds (harlequin, murre, guillemot, loon, merganser, scoter, brant, cormorant, heron, eagle, falcon, and occasionally tufted puffin) can be spotted as well, most people seem to be more interested in seeing the harbor seals. The tip of the Dungeness Spit is frequently covered with very large numbers of families of seals. We always approach the large seal colony from a distance slowly and with caution to not alarm them to trample their young as the seals head for the waterñtheir natural form of defense and safety. Participants tour the lighthouse museum and have the opportunity to climb to the top of the lighthouse tower where they can view Victoria and the neighboring San Juan Islands to the north, as well as the majestic Olympic Mountains to the south.

From a distance, paddlers can view harbor seals at the tip of the Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge.

People of all ages can enjoy the sea kayaking experience of the lighthouse tour.
